The coastal and sedimentary zones
of the White Sea are rich in algae thickets

Their growth is facilitated by the shallowness of the sea, suitable for attaching a substrate (boulders, stones, numerous puddles), the absence of strong waves, sufficient illumination in the surface layers of water, an abundance of nutrient salts and good aeration of water.

There are over 190 species of algae in the White Sea, and only six are used in industry: five brown species — two types of kelp and three types of fucus — and one type of red ones — anfeltia.
