Fucus

Fucus

What’s the power? Fucus and ascophyllum!

Fucus is actively used in the development and making of seaweed products under the “AB1918” brand. To do this, the Arkhangelsk Seaweed Factory is engaged in the collection of two types of this alga: Fucus vesiculosus and Ascophyllum nodosum. Both grow in an ecologically clean area of the Solovetsky Archipelago.

Fucus cleverly adapted to the harsh life in the tide zone. They have dense, leathery, and heavy bodies, which are needed to survive the high tide and not dry out in the sun at low tide. At high tide, it would be difficult for such seaweed to rise from the bottom to photosynthesize due to the weight. Therefore, they have bubbles on the surface that lift them up in the water like air balloons.

Fucus is harvested by hand with scythes from a depth of 0.5 to 2.5 m. The age of the thallus of a plant can be 4 years old and up.

Both types of fucus, which are collected and used by the Arkhangelsk Seaweed Factory, are a real treasure chest of health from the depths of the sea.
Dry seaweed contains:

  • mineral salts - iodine, calcium, manganese, potassium, magnesium, and silicon;
  • fatty acids;
  • proteins;
  • free amino acids and peptides;
  • algin or alginic acids, polymannuronic acid, fucose, mannitol, sorbitol, fucoidan, and some cellulose;
  • a large amount of vitamin C;
  • phenolic compounds, triterpenes (steroids, carotenoids, squalene), allantoin;
  • polysaccharides, polyphenols (phloroglucinol), vitamins, fats, and amino acids.

It is very important that the mineral substances, which are absorbed by the fucus from the water in huge quantities, are in an organic colloidal state and can be freely and quickly digested by the human body.

Fucus seaweed synthesizes sulphated polysaccharides called fucoidans, the main monomer of which is L-fucose. These biopolymers exhibit a variety of biological activities: anticoagulant, antiviral, antiulcer, antitumor, etc. This is what makes it possible to use fucus in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic industry, medicine, and dietary supplement production. Besides, they are used in food industry, veterinary medicine, and agriculture.

The Arkhangelsk Seaweed Factory advises everyone to pay attention to products containing northern fucus. You will surely find something for yourself there, and your body will certainly thank you for your care!
