During World War I, Russia had an urgent need of various medicines, and in particular, it was sorely lacking iodine, which was vital in military hospitals and on the battlefields. The government decided to organize large-scale iodine production to provide the military units with the necessary amount of iodine.

For more than 100 years, the company formed during World War I has been producing unique and useful substances and additives out of the White Sea seaweed for human health.

By decision of the Russian government, a group of scientists led by V.E. Tishchenko - professor of chemistry and organics at St. Petersburg University examined the seaweed of the White and Barents Seas. Due to the results of a unique expedition, academician Tishchenko developed a technology for producing iodine from seaweed.

The report on the results of the work of the scientists was sent to Prince of Oldenburg, Alexander Petrovich - the head of the medical and evacuation unit, who was entrusted with all power at the fight front and rear over the medical, sanitary and evacuation facilities. As a result, in 1916-1918 the iodine factory was built on the shores of the White Sea in the city of Arkhangelsk under the supervision of professor Tishchenko and under the personal supervision of Prince of Oldenburg.

1918 January

The iodine factory in the city of Arkhangelsk was finally put into operation. Thus the first reserves of iodine appeared in the North of Russia.

The iodine factory survived many reorganizations before it became the Arkhangelsk Seaweed Factory. The quiet, stagnant period lasted very long, when the plant produced three types of products for technical purposes mainly. But the efforts and dedication of the smartest people working at the factory in those days, such as engineer V. K. Nizovkin, scientists K. P. Gemp and V. A. Vinogradov, theologian and seminary scholar P. A. Florensky (father Pavel), helped develop seaweed production through their ideas and plans.

1934

First samples of agar in the USSR were developed at the Arkhangelsk Seaweed Factory. By purity and gelling ability the White Sea agar turned out to be better than the Japanese counterpart. Agar is still widely used for the production of marmalade, soufflé "Bird's milk", jelly and other sweet dishes. 

1941

Scientists have figured out that Laminaria seaweed contain a lot of mannitol (10-15%).

Because of this, it was decided to open a mannitol workshop, where the substance was extracted from seaweed with ethyl alcohol, and the purified substance was clarified and repeatedly subjected to crystallization.

Mannitol (lat. mannitum) is an alcohol of sugar groups and is used in the medical industry for the production of such drugs as reoglyuman, reopolyglucine, mannitol solution for injections, diclofenac, etc.


1948

The Arkhangelsk Seaweed Factory launches the first and only alginate workshop in the USSR.

After the alginate and mannitol production started the factory faced environmental problems because “harmful tar”, “dirty liquor” and “boiling salts” were obtained as illiquid tonnage waste. At that time these, unexplored by Russian scientists, wastes caused criticism of ecologists. This situation has significantly complicated the work of the factory, but it has not stopped and after a few decades the factory received confirmation from the Doctor of Technical Sciences from St. Petersburg that these production “wastes” were the most useful and beneficial substances!

1980 s

An employee of the St. Petersburg Forest Technical Academy, Doctor of Technical Sciences V.B. Nekrasov was sent to Arkhangelsk to try to deal with the hazardous waste and solve the protracted difficult situation at the seaweed factory, which has already helped Russians survive World War I and World War II.

The hardest thing was to realize that this “hazardous waste” is actually unique, useful, biologically active substance that can be used in medicine, cosmetology, and technology. During this period, some technologies were supplemented and improved, for example, the production of chlorophyll copper complex from Laminaria. The study of the chemical composition and testing of the former “waste” in medicine, cosmetology, technology was actively conducted. During this period, the plant got a new life and new grand prospects for production.

2010

The Arkhangelsk Seaweed Factory reorganizes its production to produce medicines and substances, biologically active therapeutic and prophylactic food additives, pet food additives, dietary supplements, additives for perfumery and cosmetics. The new stage of seaweed production coincided with the increased popularity and demand for eco-products worldwide.

2018

To reach the international sales markets, the company registered the “SNOWSEA” trademark. Today the Arkhangelsk Seaweed Factory is a time-tested enterprise with 100 years of history, exclusive technologies for the extraction and processing of the White Sea seaweed.
